Fairy Tales Book Recommendations – 05/13/11

Posted on: Friday, May 13th, 2011

For the final two “fractured” fairy tales for this week we would like to suggest the following books.  Check for them in your school library, your local library, book store or on line.

Sleeping Bobby by Will Osborne and Mary Pope Osborne is a book for kids in grades K – 3.  The classic tale of Sleeping Beauty but with the male and female roles reversed.  After reading the story ask your child “Was the 13th wise woman unkind?  Do you think she made an appropriate choice for a baby present?  Explain why or why not.”

Prince Cinders by Babette Cole is written for kids aged 5 – 8.  This is a very funny and imaginative update to the Cinderella story and is about the handsome prince’s brother, Prince Cinders.  He’s envious of his brother and gets help from a fairy.  Unfortunately, the fairy is still learning and doesn’t quite have the hang of it yet.  Ask your child “Since the fairy that helped Prince Cinder made a lot of mistakes what would you tell her to do to improve her skills?”
