It’s time to start building the list of summer reading for your kids. Chapter books are great for keeping kids interested and reading at any time but especially over the summer. If your child finds a chapter book that he enjoys, that’s part of a series, he’ll want read more without being prompted. Here are a couple of chapter book that are from popular series.
Dinosaurs Before Dark (Magic Tree House, No. 1) by Mary Pope Osborne. This is a very popular beginning chapter book for younger readers in grades 1 – 3. Jack and his sister discover a tree house filled with books. They soon learn that the books are magic and they’re transported back to the time of the dinosaurs. After your child reads the book ask: “Imagine that you could step into the Magic Tree House. Which book would you select? Explain why you selected that book.”
Judy Moody Saves the World! by Megan McDonald is for slightly more accomplished readers in grades 2 – 5. Judy decides to enter a Band-Aid design contest but it doesn’t work out very well. Then a class environmental preservation project sets her off in a new direction. After your child finishes reading the book you can ask “Judy wanted to make the world a better place so she freed Toady from his cage. Do you think that was a good choice? Support your answer with details.”
