Science experiment books might be just the formula that you are looking for.  Science books are great books for kids for a number of reasons.  Many books, like those recommended below, provide hands on experiments to help kids understand the world around them.  Besides being a fun learning experience it exercises their knowledge of math and, of course, requires them to comprehend what they’re reading.

The Everything Kids’ Science Experiments Book: Boil Ice, Float Water, Measure Gravity-Challenge the World Around You! by Tom Robinson is written for kids aged 9 – 12.  This book enables you and your child to perform dozens of science experiments using standard household items.

Gizmos & Gadgets: Creating Science Contraptions That Work (& Knowing Why) by Jill Frankel Hauser is for kids in grades  4 – 7.  The projects in this book use simple household items to create gizmos and gadgets that teach the basic concepts of gravity, inertia, balance, and energy.  A science activity book that will keep you child busy and learning for hours.
