Some Lesser Known October Holidays.

Posted on: Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

It’s less than a week to October.  Ask your kids what’s special about October and most likely they will tell you that October is all about Halloween.  Just for fun, today’s blog provides some interesting information about what else occurs in October.

October is:

  • Bullying Prevention Month
  • Eat Better Eat Together Month
  • National Book Month
  • National Go On A Field Trip Month
  • National Reading Group Month
  • Pizza Month
  • National Popcorn Poppin Month

October also has some interesting weekly observances posted too.  My favorite is Kids’Goal Setting Week.  Imagine my surprise when I discussed this with  my 4th grade grandson and he responded that his teacher had already instituted a weekly writing and reflection project for his class on goal setting.  On Mondays the kids are supposed to set their goal(s) for the week and on Friday reflect on whether they achieved what they had hoped to.  The kids write in a journal giving supporting details about whether they had reached their goal and then reflect on how they felt if they did not.  They also are to support their answers with reasons that may have contributed to their success or reasons that contributed to having to try a little harder.  WOW!! I was impressed.

So enjoy the upcoming events for October and maybe try out goal setting with the kids.  Hopefully, no one will say BOO!
